Maurilia Ortiz-Blakley Westside Learning Corner Scholarship
This scholarship was established in honor of Maurilia Ortiz-Blakley. As a community leader and activist, she dedicated a good portion of her life to fighting for the rights of women and immigrants in the Grand Rapids area. After raising a family as a single parent, she completed her high school diploma, and eventually earned her Bachelor’s degree. This scholarship will be awarded to a female student who must be age 24 or older. Students may be enrolled in any GRCC program, but students enrolled at the Westside Learning Corner with plans to transition from the Westside Learning Corner GED and/or ESL program to attend GRCC will be given priority. The ESL student must have obtained a 236 or higher in the CASAS assessment, and the GED student must have obtained their complete GED. Scholarships will be given to a student who is not eligible for Federal Financial Aid. Recipients must also be foreign born-first generation Latina.
