Elva VanHaitsma English Scholarship

Elva VanHaitsma taught at GRCC in the English Department for 30 years. She inspired her students through her love of poetry and literature. This scholarship is meant to support students who intend to complete a Bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, and/or Writing. Applicants must demonstrate academic ability and a commitment to completing a Bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, and/or Writing.

Required Application Materials:

  • A One-Two Page Cover Letter: 12-point type, double spaced. Summarize your eligibility for this scholarship. Include related coursework, experiences, and your commitment to completing a Bachelor’s degree.
  • A Writing Sample: of up to (3) original poems, a short story, a literary critique, or a research paper on a literary topic.

  1. Attach transcripts for any college you have attended (entering freshman may apply without a transcript)
  2. I understand that I must meet the GPA requirement for each scholarship to which I apply. If my GPA does not meet the minimum GPA requirement when the Fall semester GPA is calculated (after the end of the Fall semester), any GPA-dependent scholarship award and/or scholarship funds applied to my student account will be withdrawn.
  3. Please upload a Letter of Recommendation from a faculty member.
